What happens when a graduate in Naval Architecture and a Fine Arts Graduate get married, and then in 1981 they cash in all their belongings for a yacht called Hornpipe and sail across the world with their two small sons on an open ended adventure?

Well, if you’re the Trubridge family, the land and sea becomes a part of who you are just as much as what you stand for. You explore, discover, persevere, and create – and you’re not afraid to take risks.

David Trubridge exhibits his work extensively throughout the world, and is widely celebrated for his creations original and environmentally sensitive qualities. His work is produced in New Zealand using only natural materials in order to reduce the effect on the environment.

I’ve been stalking the Trubridge family for a little while now, and whilst I find myself in awe of David’s exceptional craft, it was actually his youngest son William that first caught my attention. Back in 1997 he embarked on a world record breaking roll for free diving, was the first person ever to break the 100m barrier unassisted, and as of 2013 he holds the world record in the free immersion and the constant weight without fins disciplines. I came across a blog William wrote where he shared childhood memories. Of his father David, William said:

The lessons that have enabled me to become a better freediver have mostly been learnt out of the water. Making wood carvings alongside my father in his workshop I learnt that the initial ecstasy of inspiration will never last you to the end of the task – after its energy was exhausted by the first gleeful hour of chiselling then if patience and discipline didn’t take over you’d be left with a hacked-at block of wood… Thanks to my father, I have never reneged on a training session, or quit when results were discouraging.

All grown up, it was William’s older brother Sam that committed his life to workshopping ideas in the creative realm, and is an award winning performance designer. David’s partner Linda splits up her time between design, art and yoga, and is currently writing a book called Passages about that 1980s yacht voyage to New Zealand.

When speaking with David, who had just returned from New York after the US launch of his own book So Far, which explores his fascinating life and his approach to design, I asked him how those wanderlust days affected both the family and him personally in the role of designer.

“I think the word RISK is key to that,” he tells me of their ten year nomadic journey. “If you are brought up in a more static system in suburbia most people wouldn’t have the realisation as children that you can do what others propose to be impossible or unacceptable.”

As a designer David believes risk is absolutely a fundamental part of being a designer.

“If you play it safe you are never going to come up with new, exciting, radical things. You only do that by stepping out into the unknown. And it’s a risk, you might fail, but if you get it right there are a lot more gains to be made.”

Present day, David would prefer to travel a little less, but the demand for tours and exhibitions keeps him on the move, and with a passion for educating and encouraging the next generation of designers, he has given lectures all over the world.

“I need those jolts that you get when travelling.” says David commenting on global culture. “The unfamiliar encourages us to see things differently, so it’s really important for me to get those insights, and be in a more challenging environment.”

We live in a world where designers often get caught up in the machine where they find themselves working for a large company that needs to keep upgrading and selling new products. We live in a world where fashion is more important than durability, and profit is more important than planet. David, however, has a timeless attitude, and strives for quality over quantity.

“There is a massive world conflict that is happening between this juggernaut of world commerce that marches along uncontrollably, and what it is that people actually need. We don’t need bigger cars, and a plasma in every room, and a new cellphone every year. Actually, we can be happy with a little more time and a little less stuff.”

David sees hope in the grassroots movements popping up all over the world.

“Wherever I go I see communities creating their own identity and amazing things are happening on a small scale,” says David. “Whereas governments are locked into bottom line inertia, individuals are becoming more responsible and self-sufficient and are breaking the ties to mass commerce. People are taking back the power.”

Taking place on Saturday, 3 August, TEDxAuckland is bringing together some of the country’s most interesting minds for a full day of stimulating talks, discussions and learning.

The event will inspire and provoke thought by exposing attendees to a selection of world-changing ideas coming from New Zealand’s top designers, artists, scientists and technologists. TEDxAuckland aims to build on the momentum of last year’s event and further strengthen the relationship between New Zealanders and the TEDx platform.

“New Zealand has a high TED saturation, which is something we should be incredibly proud of. This year’s TEDxAuckland will present a diverse mix of familiar and emerging Kiwi thinkers who are sure to ignite some great action and conversation. New Zealand is a country founded upon ingenuity, innovation and courage, and it’s time that we celebrate our many talents,” explains Blade.

Speakers in this year’s line-up include chef and award-winning author Robert Oliver; Mayor of Otorohanga and motorcycle enthusiast Dale Williams; and educator, entrepreneur and founder of the Hika programs Sophie Tauwehe Tamati.

TEDxAuckland will take place on Saturday, 3 August in the Aotea Centre. A wide range of speakers are set to take part in the full day event. A complete speaker line up will be announced in July.

TEDxAuckland is proudly supported by Principal Partner New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE), New Zealand’s international business development agency. NZTE helps New Zealand businesses grow bigger, better and faster in international markets.

The New Zealand Herald and Telecom NZ are Supporting Partners.

For those of you who missed TEDxAuckland 2012, The Last Ocean is a film that was created by one of our 2012 speakers Peter Young that looks at the last great untouched ocean, the Ross Sea and why we should be protecting it as a vital resource. If you liked what you saw of Peter at TEDx you now have two chances to hear more at cinemas in Auckland:

Rialto Newmarket – Saturday Nov 3rd at 10:30am – Peter Young will do a Q & A session afterwards - book online now

The Vic Cinema Devonport – Sunday Nov 4th at 10:40am - book online now - there is a big table booked for lunch in Corelli’s Cafe (two doors down from the cinema) for anyone who want to sit around and discuss the film afterwards.

Please book online early to help planning these and future events. If you can’t make either of the screenings but still want to help in some way, there some quick and easy steps on the ‘Take Action’ page at lastocean.org or contact Mark Russell on mark.russell@vibrantplanet.com.

On behalf of the TEDxAuckland organising team, thank you for coming along to the 2012 event! As you’ll know, we filled the Aotea Centre and the buzz in the room was incredible. Despite there being over 2,000 people in the room, you were anything but intimidating and made the speakers feel completely welcome. We hope you had a fantastic day.

As TED is about ideas worth spreading, we want to keep the spirit of sharing alive even though the 2012 event has ended. Videos for Michelle Dickinson and Andrew Patterson are now available online and we’ll be posting clips of other speakers shortly, so be sure to revisit your favourite talks and share them with your friends.

This year’s TEDxAuckland was all about getting the platform right – great speakers with great ideas, professionally presented. Next year we’re going to build on that and we are looking for people to be involved in helping us organise TEDxAuckland 2013. Our Facebook page will be the heart of this, so keep an eye on it for updates.

In addition, if you know someone with a great idea who could be a speaker at our next event (or if you are doing some great things yourself), let us know by emailing speakers@tedxauckland.com.

Thank you again. You helped create an unforgettable day. We really couldn’t have done it without you.

Please fill in the TEDx feedback form so we can a picture on what did do well and what we can improve on!

I wasn’t involved in the final few days of lights, camera, action, and so on the actual day I had the pleasure of being in the audience and watching the magic come alive.

And it blew me away.

Of course I was also simultaneously extremely relieved. This is the first TEDxAuckland event with this team, and let’s put aside the event being a 2000+ capacity sell out, the most important thing is that the event delivered. Twitter went into a frenzy, trending with thousands of fans on the day connecting with the tedxakl hash tag – because people were inspired, and that’s what it’s all about…

Ideas worth spreading.

Ka Pow! When nano specialist Michelle Dickinson was the first to step up on stage there was no doubt about it; a superhero was in our presence. We watched in amazement as she levitated a cube, presented a microchip growing human braincells and poured chocolate sauce all over her white shoe – which slid away like water off a duck’s back.

Sunday night at the speakers dinner we all came together. I asked Michelle what was it like being up on stage and she replied, “Terrifying! I remember walking onto the stage, and then I remember leaving.” And the scariest part of all, Michelle wasn’t even sure if her experiments were going to work. The cube had to be brought down to a certain temperature and she had to hand that job over to someone backstage. Even the chocolate sauce on the shoe, she found herself double guessing which shoe she had sprayed with nano. Even superheroes get nervous.

And almost ever speaker used the word terrifying. To put yourself out there, to stand by your craft and by what you believe in, it is terrifying – but it makes you stronger. And courage is contagious.

I was telling Emma Rogan at the speaker dinner that I can’t wait to get involved in the next 100 Day Project she kicks off. A few weeks ago Emma gave me a box of postcards with all these negative-positive thoughts she came up with, the result of her 100 day mission complete. Her challenge was for every day for 100 consecutive days she would take a negative thought and express it in an opposite positive thought, until she had 100 good thoughts.

Some are cheeky, I GREW UP / BUT NOT QUITE and others are poignant such as YOU’RE GONE / I REMEMBER YOU VIVIDLY. And my personal favourite,

I FEAR YOUR JUDGEMENT / I DON’T LET IT STOP ME.

Emma, like so many of the other speakers, has left a trail of inspiration, and opportunities for everyone to get involved. It’s now up to us to pick up the baton.

At the dinner table I was sitting opposite Matthew Simmons, who has become a very special friend in my life ever since we met a couple months ago. He’d been bouncing around the room chatting with people all evening and then I caught his animated eyes and he grinned and said,

“Jamie, I’m in heaven! Tonight is like a giant candy store of imagination.”

And it really was the sweetest thing; all these humble, great minds sharing space, and it certainly wasn’t all geek speak. To my left was physicist and pursuer of the Higgs Boson ‘God particle’ David Krofcheck and sitting next to him was his lovely wife Liz. They met in the States, David’s country of origin, spent four platonic days together and then wrote letters to each other for two years! You know? Those things you stick a stamp on and drop in the mailbox. I can’t even remember the last time I posted a letter. David says meeting Liz was like a lightning bolt. They’ve been together for 24 years now, proving yet again that persistence really does pay off.

Towards the end of the night Elliott Blade, our young captain at the helm of this production – got up and said some words and answered the question, WHY? Why do it? A couple years ago Elliott started to witness an exodus of his friends going offshore. A lot of the time we don’t see what is right here in front of us, pockets of awesomeness bursting across the land of Aotearoa New Zealand.

Having these TEDx events gives us the opportunity to bring it all to the surface. And it’s much bigger than the speakers, because in the end, it’s really about what the people take away from the experience, and it’s about building on the momentum. TEDxAuckland 2013 is already being mapped out in the engine room. The wheels are turning, onwards and upwards and away we go.

So what is your passion? What keeps you awake at night?

Like Pip Hall said, standing courageously up on stage in her swimsuit,

“Lean into the joy.”

Booktrack melds together the two things that spark me up like a fire cracker: words and music. And at the beginning of this year when I heard that the prolific composer John Psathas had scored the music for Salmon Rushdie’s short story In the South, in that moment I knew the people behind Booktrack had teamed up two giants on the creative stomping ground. I snatched up the iPad, hit download, and became completely immersed.

In the South is set in India, and having never travelled to India, the music created a deeper ethnic connection to the backdrop of the story, transforming the book into a more communicative art form. There is this part in the book where Salmon writes,

“…to notice the moment when the thing happened that must happen to us all in the end, when the last little puff of vapor pops out of our mouths and dissolves into fetid air.”

And the music feels naked and haunting, and transfixed, like a scene out of a movie. But a few pages further in there is an earthquake, and just as the first giant wave hits, the drum roll proceeds and the music becomes dark and physical.

Paul Cameron, CEO of Booktrack and TEDxAuckland 2012 speaker, lined up an opportunity for me to meet John Psathas in Wellington.

Says John, with a strike of passion that is contagious, “Creating music for In the South was about evoking the world that the story was placed in. I must have read it fifty times! I read the book so many times the whole thing was inside me before I started writing music.”

John scored the short story over a two month period and then sixty six performers from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) recorded the music in one day. And the post production was handled by none other than Park Road Post, (The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings and King Kong).

But the exciting part really is that Booktrack is still in its infancy. Paul Cameron is a determined man. He went out there and secured funding from some of the most exceptional investors in the world, and now the Booktrack library is starting to expand, the technology is being developed and improved all the time, and essentially we’re dealing with disruptive technology – an innovation that helps create a new market and eventually goes on to disrupt an existing market. The bar has not yet been set.

No one really knows how we will be consuming ebooks five years from now.

For the first time since the printing press came into being, the world of reading is changing dramatically. Especially for the younger generations who have been raised with digital TV and music on the move, sound has become a natural enrichment of their habitat.

And I don’t know exactly what Paul has planned for his TEDx Talk on Saturday 6 October, but one thing is certain; to trigger the pursuit of knowledge and creativity is to enter a realm of limitless possibilities.

With the event now just weeks away, TEDxAuckland is pleased to announce the names of the inspiring New Zealanders who complete this year’s impressive speaker line-up.

Event organiser Elliott Blade believes the high calibre of this year’s speakers will not only see the event reach full-capacity, but also spark an inspiring relationship between New Zealanders and the TEDx platform.

“It will be a great day of dynamite presentations from some of New Zealand’s brightest. The diverse mix of speakers is sure to ignite some great conversation and see the beginning of an inspiring and thought provoking relationship between New Zealanders and the TEDx platform.”

The final group of speakers for this year’s event include renowned New Zealand poet Sam Hunt; passionate literacy advocate and CEO of Booktrack, Paul Cameron; and CEO of the Gibson Group Victoria Spackman.

Up-and-coming Indie Folk band Five Mile Town will be the day’s featured entertainment.
It’s a journey to the ravishing Ross Sea in Antarctica; home to penguins, whales, seals and the richest diversity of Southern Ocean fishes and animals many of which are found nowhere else on earth. The Last Ocean tells the story of the race to protect the Ross Sea – the most pristine ocean on Earth from man’s insatiable appetite for fish – in this case Antarctic Toothfish, masqueraded on the menus of elite restaurants around the world as Chilean Sea Bass.

But remove the Toothfish and the Ross Sea food-web will start to collapse. The natural balance of what scientist’s refer to as our ‘last living laboratory’ will be lost forever – a crime so unforgivable, so irreparable – there is no word for it.

On the 1st of August I attended The Last Ocean world premiere in Auckland and was overcome with emotion. I had rage in my chest and a lump in my throat. I found myself in a state of suspended disbelief that while the world is falling apart, we are actually fighting over a luxury food item. Rare and luxury go hand in hand, like thieves in the night.

Peter explains the genesis. “Back in 1996 New Zealand sent the first fishing boat, since then, up to 20 vessels from twelve different nations have battle the harsh conditions and take around 3,000 tonnes of toothfish out of the ecosystem every season,” says Peter. “Yet surprisingly one of the strongest supporters for banning fishing in the Ross Sea is the New Zealand diplomat who was instrumental in starting it up. Stuart Prior.is fronting up and now telling the public that they made a mistake, and he is calling on the new Government to put some ‘steel in its spine’ and lead the way out.”

Peter’s journey to the Ross Sea began six years ago with a knock at door. He was a freelance documentary cameraman living in Christchurch when Colorado nature photographer John Weller turned up inviting him on a trip to film and photograph the wildlife in the Ross Sea. John had recently read a scientific paper written by US Ecologist Dr David Ainley about the Ross Sea and how it could teach us about the workings of all marine ecosystem. For all three, the Last Ocean became a labour of love and they have working together on the project ever since. “What it comes down to is the real value of the Ross Sea, and whether we should leave one last untouched ocean for future generations,” said Peter.

The film is part of a growing public campaign asking the NZ Government to call for a ban on commercial fishing in the Ross Sea. In late October this year the 25 countries that govern the waters around Antarctica will meet to discuss proposals for protecting the Ross Sea.

Says Peter, “The power is now in the hands of the people to rise up and MAKE A STAND FOR THE LAST OCEAN by writing to the Minister and signing the petition. There are things that we can do on our own to change one life. And then there are things we can do together to change the world.”

It’s been an incredible journey for Peter Young and on Saturday 6th of October he will be sharing his story with TEDxAuckland.

The October event will present a diverse range of speakers that will ignite conversation, encourage new thinking and expose attendees to world-changing ideas from the minds of New Zealand’s top scientists, artists, educators and technologists.

With momentum building, TEDxAuckland is announcing the names of more inspiring New Zealanders who will take the stage alongside an already impressive line-up of speakers.

Event organiser Elliott Blade believes this year’s speakers have what it takes to draw the crowds and spark an inspiring relationship between New Zealanders and the TEDx platform.

“We have chosen to host the event at Aotea Centre in Central Auckland so that we can accommodate the expected demand. For many people this will be their first TEDx experience and I hope that it will be the beginning of an inspiring and thought provoking relationship with TED and the TEDx platform.”

Newly announced speakers for this year’s event include distinguished documentary director of The Last Ocean, Peter Young; Comedian, entertainer and social entrepreneur, Philip Patston; award-winning playwright, Pip Hall; and Aakash Polra, Jade Tan and Mohit Singh, the trio behind software start-up Mobileeye.

These inspiring individuals will present their ideas alongside physicist and political advisor Sean Gourley; change development specialist Paul Wood; physicist and pursuer of the Higgs boson ‘god particle’ David Krofcheck; materials and biomedical engineer Michelle Dickinson; internationally recognised architect Andrew Patterson; Co-founder of medical start-up SIMTICs John Windsor; Founder of the 100 Days Project Emma Rogan; CEO of Arvus Group Matthew Simmons; and dental surgeon and founder of ICARE Assil Russell.

TEDxAuckland will take place on Saturday 6 October at the ASB Theatre in the Aotea Centre. Eighteen speakers are set to take part in the full day event which will run from 10.00am until 5.30pm. A complete speaker line up will be announced in September.

TEDxAuckland is proudly sponsored by Yellow®, Kordia, New Zealand Post, Sony, Powershop, Scoop Media Cartel, Digital Arts Network, Flitter, Deafradio and The Goat Farm.
